James Woodward教授是美国当代著名哲学家，匹兹堡大学科学史与科学哲学系荣休教授，曾任加州理工学院J.O.和朱丽叶·科普夫利人文学科教授。主要研究科学哲学，尤其关注因果关系和科学解释，在道德与政治哲学以及心理学哲学领域也著述颇丰。Woodward教授曾任美国科学哲学协会主席（2010-2012年），2016年当选为美国艺术与科学学院院士（American Academy of Arts and Sciences）。
 

内容简介

This talk is based on joint work with Naftali Weinberger and Porter Williams. The talk will describe an alternative to currently dominant approaches to the metaphysics of causation. It is motivated by the gap between metaphysical accounts and recent epistemological research on causal reasoning and methods for discovering causal relationships. I will suggest that these methods constrain what is “out there” in the world that supports causal reasoning. My talk will characterize structural features of the actual world that are exploited by successful strategies for causal reasoning and discovery. I call these features the “worldly infrastructure” of causation. I will identify elements of this worldly infrastructure, sketch accounts of their physical bases, and explain how they contribute to the possibility of successful causal reasoning.

本次演讲基于与纳夫塔利·温伯格 (Naftali Weinberger) 和波特·威廉姆斯 (Porter Williams) 的合作研究。演讲将探讨一种替代当前主流因果形而上学方法的方案。其动机在于形而上学论述与近期关于因果推理和因果关系发现方法的认识论研究之间的差距。我将指出，这些方法限制了支持因果推理的“外部”世界。我的演讲将描述现实世界的结构特征，这些特征被成功的因果推理和发现策略所利用。我将这些特征称为因果关系的“世界基础”。我将识别这些世界基础的要素，概述它们的物理基础，并解释它们如何促成成功的因果推理。
