主讲人简介
James Rooney博士为香港浸会大学的助理教授，研究方向为形而上学，中世纪哲学，程朱理学等。在美国圣刘易斯大学获得哲学博士学位。曾任教于罗马托马斯大学，圣刘易斯大学。2021年起任教于香港浸会大学。发表论文30多篇，专著一部：Material Objects in Confucian and Aristotelian Metaphysics: The Inevitability of Hylomorphism (Bloomsbury Academic, 2022)，译名：儒家和亚里士多德形而上学中的物质对象——不可避免的形质论。
讲座内容
人们使用质料与形式来分析物体之形而上学结构的方法常常被以为是另一种将人视为人格同一性与人身体的组成的叙述，而这会导致二元论或者某种形态的还原论。讲座者将应用一种将人分析为由某种自然类和其本质所构成的组合的视角，来探讨与人格同一性相关的几个问题。
Hylomorphism – a view of material composition on which the unity of material objects is explained by appeal to form and matter – is often alleged to be an alternative not easily distinguished from other accounts of material composition and personal identity, collapsing into either dualism or some form of reductionism. I apply a hylomorphic account to questions of personal identity, highlighting that this view holds that persons are individuals of a given natural kind (a composite material object of the kind ‘homo sapiens’) and that whatever comes to compose a substance as a part undergoes intrinsic changes in its nature or essence. I employ a hylomorphic framework to address three related problems for personal identity: mereological pairing problems, ‘remnant persons’ and transplant cases, and problems resulting from the apparently indeterminate identity of developmentally plastic zygotes.
