Michael Beaney (毕明安) is Professor of History of Analytic Philosophy at the Humboldt University in Berlin, Regius Chair of Logic at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, and Visiting He Lin Chair Professor of Philosophy at Tsinghua University. Recent books include The Oxford Handbook of the History of Analytic Philosophy (edited, OUP, 2013) and Analytic Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction (OUP, 2017). A new translation of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus is forthcoming in the Oxford World’s Classics series. As well as history of analytic philosophy, his research interests include philosophical methodology (especially analysis and creativity), historiography, philosophical translation, and Chinese philosophy (especially ancient Chinese philosophy of language and logic).

This talk discusses seven principles of translation that informed my new translation of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus, principles that are not only of philosophical significance in their own right but also raise questions about, and shed light on, Wittgenstein's philosophy.
